Ecuadorian international Marco Angulo has passed away at age 22, a little over a month after sustaining serious injuries in a car accident, his club LDU Quito announced.
The midfielder had been hospitalized since the October 7 crash, which occurred in southern Quito, Ecuador's capital. According to reports, Angulo underwent multiple surgeries and spent over a week in intensive care before succumbing to his injuries on Monday night.
“With deep sorrow, we must inform you of the passing of our beloved player, Marco Angulo,” LDU Quito, a top-flight Ecuadorian club, stated on Tuesday morning. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. His loss is irreplaceable and leaves an indelible mark in our hearts.”
Angulo joined LDU Quito on loan from MLS club FC Cincinnati in March, with an option to buy. During his time with LDU, he made 16 appearances, his last being on October 6, one day before the accident.
A promising young talent, Angulo earned his first cap for Ecuador in November 2022, debuting as a substitute in a 0-0 draw against Iraq. He went on to represent his country three times.
In a statement, the Ecuadorian Football Association expressed deep condolences: “Marco was not only an exceptional player but also a wonderful teammate. His passing leaves a profound sadness, especially for those of us who traveled, trained, and competed alongside him. Rest in peace, Angulito.”
The accident also claimed the lives of Independiente del Valle player Roberto Cabezas and their friend, Victor Carcopa. Two other passengers were in the vehicle, but their current condition is unknown.
