Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso acknowledged the challenge his team faces against Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday, describing the Merseyside club as one of Europe’s top teams right now.
Leverkusen will meet an in-form Liverpool at Anfield, with Arne Slot's men boasting nine points from three games and sitting second in the 36-team standings, just ahead of Leverkusen in sixth with seven points. Liverpool also leads the Premier League.
"For us, it’s a big challenge. Liverpool at the moment are one of the best, if not the best, in Europe. They’re showing that in both the Premier League and Champions League—a strong squad with a great coach. We're looking forward to it; let’s see what happens," Alonso said in a press conference on Monday.
"You can play brilliantly for 70 minutes, and then in 20 minutes, the game can slip away. We have to be mentally and emotionally prepared for that," he added.
"In all areas, they’re incredibly strong. The process is very effective, and the manager (Slot) has done an impressive job in just three months."
Alonso, well remembered at Liverpool for his 210 appearances between 2004 and 2009, was central to the club's success, including their Champions League victory in 2005. However, he won’t have much time for nostalgia.
"Sadly, there's no time for sightseeing—maybe a short run or walk tomorrow. I know the city well and love it, but my focus is solely on the game," he said.
"It feels great to be back after all these years. It’s always special. You notice the club's growth; the new stand looks fantastic. Tomorrow’s match against Liverpool is a big one—there’s nothing quite like it."
